The paper reviews the main sources and types of vibration in ships and provides details of their impacts on habitability, safety, and equipment integrity. Modern vibration analysis and prediction methodologies, industry acceptance criteria, and standardized measurement procedures are discussed, and practical solutions for mitigating vibration problems from the newbuilding stage through to operation are offered. The practical case studies included in the appendix illustrate a variety of vibration defects and demonstrate effective mitigation strategies.
